<image:caption>2024 Scholarship Winner Student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology As an HVAC engineer, my dad was always fixing things, and I loved to help. I remember us fixing up his car together and playing catch in the backyard. But as I got older, he grew detached and moody, and our games together halted. I eventually learned why: he suffered from Glaucoma since youth and his vision was worsening. He stopped driving after accidentally driving me over a highway median. This and many failed eye surgeries left him bitter. Learning to understand why my dad acted the way he did allowed me to reconnect with him. He told me about opportunities he couldn’t take as a kid because of his eyesight and pushed me to chase my dreams. I started wanting to become an engineer like him. I joined a research lab studying electrical vehicles, reminding me of how me and my dad worked on his car together, and how that same car nearly killed me. My experiences growing up with a visually-impaired father taught me to see from others’ points of view and inspired me to work to use engineering to help people. I’ve recently committed to MIT and hope to graduate early, having two years of dual credits. I plan to join the ROTC and serve for a few years, before returning to school for a Masters/PhD. I see this scholarship opportunity as a chance to honor my father's legacy, further develop my skills, and one day make a meaningful impact by using engineering to benefit humanity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I reviewed her work and told her that she had gotten the problem correct. A bright smile developed across her face. We had come so far from when I started tutoring Emilia just a year ago. I had never imagined that being a tutor would enhance my education in a way that lectures and textbooks could not. I learned the joy of giving, the satisfaction of seeing progress, and the fulfillment of working on a goal together.” —Excerpt from the essay of Estella Gonzales</image:caption>

<image:caption>2025 Scholarship Winner Northeastern University As a kid, I’d leap across the living room, convinced I was a superhero. What stuck with me wasn’t the flying—it was the crash. One painful landing, one swollen ankle, and I realized I might not save the world the way I imagined. Still, I never let go of that desire to help others. My parents sparked that dream. My Cambodian immigrant mother never had the chance to pursue higher education. She often speaks of arriving in the U.S. with no support—except for my father. That loneliness stayed with her, and with me. My father, a passionate Democrat, introduced me to politics during Obama’s re-election. He told me someone like me—an Asian girl who didn’t see herself as a leader—could rise to power. That stuck. So, my dream evolved. I wanted to lead, give people hope, and be the person my mom once needed. When I found my passion for law, everything clicked. History, politics, and service—everything I loved—aligned with becoming an immigration lawyer. That journey wasn’t easy. I struggled early in high school, but I got back up. I worked harder, improved my study habits, and found strength through Mock Trial, AP History, journalism, and Student Council. While I’m no superhero, I’m a woman who has faced challenges Captain America could never imagine. As an Asian American woman, I know society rarely sees us as heroes. But I’m committed to becoming my best self—someone who uplifts others and creates change through the law.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2025 Scholarship Winner Student from Leander, TX I am a queer, disabled, Latina, fat, first-generation college student on reduced lunch, and my paternal grandparents were immigrants. If you’re just looking for diversity, I check most of the boxes. However, I don’t have some grand story to share about being a minority because I am lucky and I am privileged. But I am more than a statistic, more than my last name, my body or who I love. I possess a collection of records, as well as a record player, because that mode of listening is much more intentional and momentous. I am a bit of an artist, a painter mostly, but I don’t want that to be my job because I don’t want to lose the light it brings to my eyes. I bring vintage pieces and knick-knacks into my space because they feel so much more genuine and fulfilling than all of the modern things mass-produced in Chinese factories using cheap supplies and even cheaper labor that ends up going to waste in a few years. These are such little things that one wouldn’t think much of, yet everyone has a different opinion, or a different meaning in these things, and I hope to share both mine and others. Everyone knows that people who look different exist, who love different people, or come from different backgrounds. It's the little things that astonish us, that get us thinking, and realizing we would never have thought about something so little in such a different way.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Parasites, mental illness, and snails fascinate me, but not only in a biological sense—while I learn the classification of parasites, I also read folktales about them, predating their ‘scientific’ discovery; I study both the biological reasons behind mental illness, and how different societies perceive them; I observe the anatomy of the snail, understanding it through both the appropriate terminology and my drawings of its internal structures." —Excerpt from the essay of Amy Y., who attends Clark University</image:caption>
